Port of Antwerp

From the city center of Antwerp, it’s quite the sight to see these large container ships pass by. The port of Antwerp is a real deepsea port despite the fact its 80 kilometers inland. Steel, fruit, and coffee can be transported to the European mainland a lot faster and more sustainable. This is the main reason why the Antwerp port is the second-largest port in Europe.

Resembling the uniqueness of the port is the building of the port authority. The offices have been recently renovated and are a unique sight. Designed by Zaha Hadid. This unique structure honors the old building and makes room for expansion on top. The design is loosely based on a diamond in the shape of a both to resemble Antwerp’s two most important sources of income.

Is Antwerp the right move? A deep dive into life in Belgium's Diamond City

Antwerp offers expats an appealing mix of affordability, cultural richness, and strong job prospects, particularly through its bustling port. While housing remains reasonably priced and public transport comprehensive, newcomers face challenges like Europe's highest tax rates and potential language barriers with Dutch being predominant. The city shines with its multicultural tolerance, outdoor lifestyle, and vibrant entertainment scene, though winter months bring limited daylight and frequent rain. Despite infrastructure quirks and housing complexities, Antwerp's ranking among the world's fastest-growing cities reflects its rising appeal for international residents.
